Jhon and His Big, Big, Family

Labuk, April 1st 2011

From Sepilok we headed to Labuk. This time it was a big, big, excitement. Very unlike our experience with the orang utans from Sepilok. This time we could get very, very close to the proboscis monkeys.

Proboscis monkeys are also called "Bekantan" or "Monyet Belanda" or "Monyet Bayau". For some reference, you can seek here and here

This is the road to Platform A, where we would meet the proboscis monkeys a.k.a. bekantan.

 Entering the platform...

into the sanctuary of the proboscis a.k.a. bekantan ...

This is Jhonathan, our guide. He is the one who will call the proboscis monkeys to come out and enjoy a big meal. "A-auw! A-auw!" he would shout.

Suddenly we hear the leaves crushing. 'Someone' is coming.

There he is! It's Jhon. Well, don't get confused! Jhon was named by Jhon our guide after his own name. And, both 'Jhon' stand for 'Jhonathan'. So from now on, you must be careful whether it's Jhon the monkey or Jhon the guide... LOL

Jhon is ready for supper prepared by Jhon.

 A close up of Jhon.

Proboscis love 2 things: Cucumber and pancake. They love cucumber when it is hot and pancake when it is cold. However, on this particular day 'everyone' seemed to savor on anything. Jhon is munching a cucumber.

Dina and Jhon.

Hahhh... Jhon is full and stretches his legs. Kenyaaanggg!!

A squirrel is up to proboscis' meal.

Another big family is coming. Can you see them?

Some are coming with their baby. No wonder they are a bit late for supper. It's hard to be punctual when you are with kids, isn't it?

The seeming-dominant male grabs his first treat.

Finally the whole family sits down for supper.

But the little tiny baby has its own special meal from mom's breast.

But the little tiny baby has its own special meal from mom's breast.

This baby is not afraid. It wants to explore its world. Probably it will grow up into a traveler like the photographer :P

A toddler still needs to stay close to Mom. Especially when there are many tourists from all over the world like now. "Be careful, Darling. You don't know who they are," whispers Mom; and Toddy -- a short form of 'toddler' -- clings tight on Mom.

Look at me! I can eat by myself!

 Teenagers, huh?

 Learning to be a "dominant-male"?

Enjoying pancake as much as possible while you are still young.

Macaques are inferior to proboscis in size, but superior in attitude. It will not hesitate to growl and even hit a proboscis if it attempts to eat at the same table, although it's actually proboscis' table. Jhon -- the guide as well the monkey -- dislike macaques. Macaques are never fed, but never starve either.

The older a male grows, the longer its nose will grow.

"Don't worry. I'm here with you, Sweetie... "
